Pochettino is said to have met with the PSG administration last week to discuss the 2021-22 season, during which his club won Ligue 1 but lost in the Champions League round of 16 to eventual champions Real Madrid. The talk is said to have resulted in a mutual agreement that the former PSG captain will not return to the Parc des Princes dugout, with both parties deciding that a parting of ways would be the most reasonable course of action. Pochettino's contract was set to expire in 2023, thus his departure has yet to be finalised. However, the club is already seeking for a new captain, with Nice's Christophe Galtier being one of the possibilities. Pochettino's departure will come after that of sports director Leonardo, who was fired last week. Luis Campos, who will work as PSG's football advisor, has taken his place. Last summer, Pochettino had a chance to leave Paris Saint-Germain — Real put him high on their list of contenders to succeed Zinedine Zidane, and Tottenham Hotspur expressed strong interest in selecting their ex-manager as Jose Mourinho's successor — but a transfer for the 50-year-old did not materialise. Pochettino became only the third PSG manager to lead the club to a European Cup semi-final, defeating a Lionel Messi-inspired Barcelona and reigning champions Bayern Munich along the way. Pochettino's side also won the French Cup, and while being pipped to the Premier League title by Lille, he inherited a club that was third when he took over from Thomas Tuchel in January 2021, and increased their points-per-game ratio. The only previous time its Qatari owners changed coaches mid-season, in December 2011, when Antoine Kombouare was replaced by Carlo Ancelotti, the team failed to win the league.
