The purchase of a midfielder is a priority for United this summer, and De Jong is their top target. After replacing interim manager Ralf Rangnick, Erik ten Hag is entering his first transfer window in command of the Red Devils. And he wants De Jong, a former Ajax star, to be his first acquisition at Old Trafford. In 2019, Ten Hag sold De Jong to Barcelona for about £65 million. United are reportedly preparing to sign the 25-year-old for up to £70 million, according to the Daily Star. United and Barcelona have agreed to a deal after De Jong decided to join the Premier League heavyweights. He wanted to stay at Barca at first, but the La Liga club's desire to sell influenced his decision. United will pay an upfront fee of £60 million, with a further £10 million paid in instalments throughout his contract. Barca is anxious for finances to make their acquisitions, and De Jong is a costly asset. With the money they get from United, they will try to recruit players like Manchester City's Bernardo Silva. Pep Guardiola's willingness to move the Portugal international, who was nominated in the PFA Team of the Year on Thursday, remains to be seen. With Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic's contracts expiring this summer, United will require at least one midfielder. Ten Hag is looking for players in both defence and offence, but midfield is his first focus. Marciano Vink, a former Ajax player, says De Jong is exactly the sort of player United needs. He said to ESPN FC: "Frenkie is someone I'm familiar with, and he's a quick learner. He wants to demonstrate his worth. "He's unhappy with his role, and he's unhappy with his performance in Barcelona. He certainly wants to perform better and prove to everyone that he is the appropriate man.
